There are several different bicycle rack configurations, such as roof
and rear-mounted styles for transporting a bicycle by car, or those that
attach directly to a bike for transporting cargo. Roof rack systems
use feet and crossbars; these racks are the most versatile as they offer
accessories such as bicycle trays, ski, snowboard, canoe and kayak racks,
and rooftop boxes. Roof rack systems also allow the bicycle to be
locked down for security. Some bicycle trays require the front
wheel of the bicycle to be removed, while others do not. Rear,
strap-mounted racks use rubber cradles and straps to hold up to four
bikes. They mount either to the top and bottom of the tailgate or
to the deck lid and underneath the bumper, using nylon straps with
plastic-covered hooks. Fit guides and weight limitations should be
checked to ensure that the appropriate bike rack model is used for your
vehicle. Trailer hitch racks also hold between two and four bikes;
these are available with 1 1/4" and 2" receiver hitches. Pannier
racks are designed to fit bicycle frames or seat posts for the purpose
of carrying items or mounting trunk bags and panniers. A variety
